AMU, Yirgalem Construction sign pact to build Specialty Hospital

Arba Minch University today has entered into an agreement with the Hawassa-based Yirgalem Construction plc to build 300-bedded Teaching-cum-Referral hospital near Madhanalem Church at Arba Minch on 5.1 hectares of land, informed Academic Affairs Vice President, Dr Agena Anjulo.

Dr Agena Anjulo from AMU and Engineer Mr Zelalem Woldemariam, who is Manager with the Yirgalem Construction, signed the pact in the presence of AMU top officials at Senate Hall on Oct 3, 2014. The construction would start after 21 days from now and likely to take 900 days to complete.
‘‘This hospital will be unique of its kinds because the general hospital built in 1950 at Arba Minch alone has been carrying the burden. It will not only train medical students, professionals but the entire community would get benefit. Its infrastructure, technical knowhow and expertise would surpass the hospitals built in Hawassa and Dilla,’’ Dr Agena claimed.

The construction would incur ETB 875 million and likely to be completed within three years time. It would have key clinical departments i.e. orthopedic, obstetrics, cardiology intensive care unit, pediatrics, neonatal, cardiovascular, gynecology, ophthalmology, surgery, nursing etc.
This would be one of the landmark institutions in South Nations and Nationalities People’s Region as it would render specialized medical treatment to the community, which till date was a far cry. It would end the anxiety of common man getting frenetic when afflicted by the disease which could only be treated in Hawassa or Addis Ababa, but now scenario would be different.
Dr Agena was very appreciative of Zonal and City Administration for providing 5.1 hectares of land to university for the hospital. College of Medicine & Health Sciences Dean Mr Behailu Medikios, said, ‘‘Apart from students education, we would also give training in specialized areas to churn out professionals in line with the needs and requirement of the nation.’’
